Project B10 (Grandoch/Flögel)

Unraveling the role of brown adipose tissue in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury

B10 aims to explore the so far unknown role of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in AMI using cutting-edge MR techniques. For this, BAT activation will be investigated pre- and post-I/R by a novel MRI T2 mapping approach as well as classical histological and molecular biology methods. In parallel, sub-strate metabolism will be longitudinally studied by non-invasive MR techniques for lipid profiling and glucose uptake in BAT and heart. BAT ablation will be utilized to elucidate its role for functional out¬come post I/R. Analyses will be expanded to diabetic conditions in a murine model and experimental data will be completed by first translational MR analyses of BAT activation in patients post AMI.
